Updated to Homicide: George Markopoulos Dies, Found at Scene at Extra-Alarm Horseshoe Inn Tavern Fire

UPDATE: Death of George Markopoulos is being investigated as a homicide.

Schiller Park firefighters responded just before 4:00 a.m. Thursday to a fire at the Horseshoe Inn, 9639 Irving Park Road in Schiller Park. George Markopoulos, 67, owner of the Horseshoe Inn, was found at the scene of the fire, and was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Markopoulos, who may have had head trauma, was pronounced dead at 4:46 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The fire, at the Horseshoe Inn, 9639 Irving Park Road, broke out shortly before 4 a.m. and was elevated to a 2-alarm fire. About 5:15 a.m. the fire was elevated to a 3-alarm. Fire departments from Des Plaines, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Hillside, Leyden Township, Northlake, Stone Park and others assisted Schiller Park Fire Department.

The building also had residential units at the back of the building.
