Chicago Fire Department Diver Dies During Underwater Search in Chicago River for Missing Man

CBS 2’s Lauren Victory reports on a developing story where a member of the CFD had to be rescued from the Chicago River.

A Chicago Fire Department rescue diver died Monday night, May 28, 2018 an underwater search operation in the Chicago River Monday night between Ashland Avenue and Damen Avenue. The CFD diver is identified as Juan Bucio, age 46.

CFD Marine Unit divers responded to a man who fell out of a boat and didn’t resurface in the Chicago River near the block of 2600 South Ashland Avenue. The boat was a small fishing boat.

Three divers entered the water, and communication with Bucio was lost. The rescue effort then switched to the Bucio, who was pulled from the river into a rescue boat, and transferred to an ambulance with CPR underway the entire time. Bucio was pronounced dead at 10:02 p.m.

Two other firefighters were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for evaluation, were in stable condition, and were released. One of the divers was Bucio’s partner.

According to the Chicago Fire Department Bucio has two sons, ages seven and nine, and has nine siblings, including a brother with the Chicago Fire Department and a sister with the Chicago Police Department.

Bucio joined the Chicago Fire Department in 2003, and became part of the dive team in 2007.
