Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar: Terrific Role Model?

#ad▼

Robbie Alomar made the Hall of Fame, FINALLY! Wow, I just couldn’t sleep, how ’bout you? He didn’t have to wait 15 years like other players (Blyleven,Rice, etc.) I just want to make one comment about Alomar–He was an AWESOME 2ND BASEMAN. He played before steroids and HGH were popular, so he was a clean act there. He played hard, made 12 All Star ballots (and coming from tiny Baltimore, he really captured the fans attention, unlike any SHMOE from a N.Y. team.) Roberto Alomar batted 300 (which reminds me of a fellow named Rod Carew, who was one of my favorite all-time players. He always seemed to get a hit when I watched him play. He was graceful, quickhad a legendary quick release and, to my knowlege, never complained about his contract or missed games due to “insufficient funds” (if you know what I mean.) He did, however, have that September 1996 incident of spitting and insulting (to put it mildly) John Hirschbeck about a strike call. Yes, he really went way to far that night when he told Hirschbeck that he ought to “keep your dead son and your almost dead son with ALS to yourself” (in so many words.)

Roberto Alomar was on my S%*! List for a few years after that, even after donating $50,000 to the ALS Foundation. The two (player and umpire) buried the hatchet later and you know what, so have I. We all lose our cool, and Alomar was one “Cool, Lucid, and Intense” player. He always played hard, played well under pressure and had just one “fopaux,” and I forgive him for that. (I bet he will rest easily knowing that.)

Let me know your thoughts and your impression of mine in this article. I have always thought that we can learn volumes from ones mistakes, and this was one that must be forgiven. I guess even professional athletes can have toilet mouth every now and then, kapish?

On January 5, 2011, Alomar was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, during his second year of eligibility.
