Grandparents Eujenia Trejo, 48, and Jose Trejo, 46, of the 2500 block of Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows, were each charged with one count of endangering the life of a child after their 5-month-old grandson, Reymond Trejo was found dead, apparently suffocated, lying face down in a pile of clothing. Their bond was set at $30,000 each during a court appearance Friday afternoon.
Prosecutors say infant Reymond Trejo was home alone Tuesday morning before he was found in the pile of clothing next to a bed. Reymond may have been by himself for at least an hour, according to Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Eujenia Trejo was declared the child’s legal guardian Monday. It’s believed she was separated from her husband and was living with her boyfriend in Arlington Heights. The infant Reymond Trejo lived with his grandfather, 17-year-old mother and 11-year-old uncle at the Rolling Meadows condominium unit.
According to the prosecutors’ report, the grandmother, Eujenia Trejo, left the baby with her relatives in Rolling Meadows on Monday night. Her husband Jose, a maintenance worker in the complex, left the residence at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday. The child’s mother (identity not released) left for school just before 7:00 a.m. Her 11-year-old brother left to catch a school bus at about 8:20 a.m.
Apparently, no adults or legal caretakers were in the condo unit with the infant for about 125 minutes, or until Jose Trejo came back at 9:15 a.m., but prosecutors say he didn’t notice or tend to the baby, and left again. Eujenia returned home before 10:00 a.m. and also did not notice or tend to the baby. Jose returned by 10 a.m. and found the child in the pile of clothing next to the bed.
Reymond was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights by unknown family members about 1:00 p.m. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital, and was deceased before arrival at the hospital. Paramedics were not called to the scene in the 2500 block of Algonquin Road on Tuesday morning. Rolling Meadows police first responded to the incident at the request of the Emergency Department at Northwest Community Hospital.
A Cook County medical examiner autopsy report indicated the child could have died from suffocation since he had abrasions on his nose consistent with him being face down in pile of clothing.
Public defender Salvatore Spaccaferro is assigned to the case for Jose Trejo. Both defendants remain in Cook County jail. Eujenia Trejo has a private attorney.
Jose Trejos and Eujenia Trejo are due in court February 2, 2011.
