Buffalo Grove police have charged four teenagers with damaging playground equipment at Alcott Center next to the Buffalo Grove Park District’s headquarters in an arson fire November 5, 2010. The four are released to their parents’ supervision.

Two boys from Buffalo Grove, a girl from Buffalo Grove, and a girl from Wheeling — all 14-years-old — will be petitioned to Cook County juvenile court on felony charges that include criminal damage to property the arson fire Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive, Buffalo Grove Police Cmdr. Steve Husak said.

Park district video cameras captured teens setting fire to leaves and other debris in a sewer grate underneath the playground, which ultimately destroyed the equipment — $100,000 damage. Two of the teens also were caught on video damaging chairs at Emmerich Park earlier in the day. In addition to video images, community tips helped to apprehend the juveniles, who confessed to the crime.

Park district officials plan replace the playground equipment in spring 2011.
