Severe Wind Tips During a High Wind Warning

#ad▼

Severe wind tips before and during a High Wind Warning becomes a reality:

1. Take down patio umbrellas and store lawn furniture before the wind starts. Retract awnings. Put away other loose items on your property (bicycles, toys, garbage containers, recycling bins). Consider skipping taking out the garbage until the following scheduled day. Anchor trampolines to ground. Bring portable basketball hoops inside the garage if possible. Don’t try to move something to safety once the high winds have started, especially items that can be highly leveraged by the wind, such as umbrellas.

2. Park your vehicle in a garage.

3. Close garage door and all other exterior doors and windows.

4. Don’t drive a high profile vehicle, especially on expressways.

5. Take extra care to avoid driving near a high profile vehicle that is on the roadway.

6. Do not stand under trees or near power lines where branches and downed power lines could kill.

7. Wear safety glasses if walking outside for a prolonged period.

8. Stay inside if possible because pieces of debris, such as tree branches, glass, pieces of construction or signage material, can become “airborne missiles” that can strike a person and cause bodily harm or death. Building materials are more likely to breakaway from a building when there is prolonged, sustained high wind, especially combined with gusts.
