Gurnee police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday to Magnolia and Pacific Avenue for a report of a crash of an ATV into a utility pole. Police arrived first and found a bystander performing CPR on Terry E. Matthews, 30, of Gurnee. The officer used his Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) that was equipped in his first responder police vehicle for an apparent traumatic cardiac arrest. A pulse was felt after use of the AED, but apparently significant trauma to other organs resulted in the the death of the ATV driver. Matthews was transported by Gurnee paramedics and was pronounced dead just after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Level II Trauma Center Vista Medical Center-East in Waukegan.

The ATV was southbound, when it flipped and ejected the driver, Matthews. He then struck the utility pole at the intersection.
