Arlington Heights Car Fire with Two Air Bag Canister Explosions at Stonebridge Apartments Parking Lot

Arlington Heights Fire Department Engine 4 crew knocks down a car fire involving a Ford Taurus at Stonebridge Apartments rear parking lot.

Arlington Heights Fire Department fought a car fire Thursday afternoon about 1:40 p.m. in a rear parking lot at the Stonebridge Apartments in the 700 block of West Rand Road. Police were first to arrive on the scene to find a fully involved car fire in the driver/passenger compartment of a 1996 Ford Taurus. During leadout of the fire hose two explosions of air bag canisters occurred. One canister became a missile that was projected almost 50 feet directly to the rear of the car toward an apartment building.

No injuries were reported. The fire was extinguished within five minutes. The car’s horn was activated during the fire. Video shows the second air bag canister explosion.
