NIU Shooting at Stevenson Residence Hall, Suspect in Custody, Northern Illinois University Student Injured

NIU Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on campus at 4:26 a.m. Friday, February 19. A campus text alert was issued at 4:29 a.m.

The incident occurred near the Stevenson Residence Hall. An NIU student was injured in the shooting, and was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for treatment.

NIU Public Safety officials report that the event appears to be an isolated incident between two individuals, and that the suspect is in custody with the DeKalb Police Department.

NIU Public Safety officials are advising all students, and campus residents to take extra precaution on Friday morning, and to be alert for any unusual circumstances. If students observe anything that appears to be out of the ordinary they are asked to call NIU Public Safety at 815-753-1212.

The NIU campus remains open, and all classes will be held as scheduled. A press briefing has been scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Altgeld Hall auditorium.

This shooting comes just a little over two years after a notorious multiple victim shooting that occurred on February 14, 2008, when a gunman shot multiple people on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, United States, killing six and wounding eighteen.
