At about 9:00 a.m. Arlington Heights Police Department put out a local broadcast that a maroon 2001 Monte Carlo had been stolen from the 600 block of South Kaspar Avenue in Arlington Heights. Within 30 minutes after entering the stolen car information on LEADS (Law Enforcement Automated Database Search), Indiana State Police notified Northwest Central Dispatch — the 9-1-1 center for Arlington Heights and other area suburbs — that the vehicle had been recovered in southern Indiana, and that a suspect was in custody.

LEADS has been used for decades by law enforcement agencies to help track stolen automobile information. Today it is also used by businesses and even in a limited manner by civilian victims of crimes.

LEADS is the nation’s largest online investigative system used to solve crimes — from burglary to identity theft to narcotics crimes. LEADS is a state–of–the–art crime fighting tool trusted by more than 1100 law enforcement agencies (over 2500 with eBay) across the country.

LEADS or LeadsOnline is the nation’s largest online investigation system, providing rapid electronic access to transactions from thousands of pawn shops, secondhand stores, and Internet drop–off stores across the country, as well as critical information about eBay listings for criminal investigations.
