I-90 Accident with Report of Person Ejected on Roadway Thursday

About 10:30 a.m. Thursday Arlington Heights Fire Department responded to their coverage area on Interstate 90, just east of Arlington Heights Road for an accident with a report of a man lying motionless on the tollway — apparently ejected from the car. With multiple reports to 9-1-1 of a person in lying in the tollway, the lead responding fire department unit requested an alert to Flight for Life medical transport. The helicopter unit out of McHenry advised that they were lifting the helicopter as part of the standby and would have a 20 minute ETA. The first fire unit on-scene canceled the Flight for Life request within a couple of minutes of the initial request for the helicopter. The fire department at that time also requested a second ambulance to the scene.

Two people were transported to the hospital. At least one person, apparently an elderly woman that was ejected from the car, was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital Level One Trauma Center. Arlington Heights put extra paramedics on the ambulance that transported the woman to Lutheran General, which indicated that serious injuries were suspected during initial evaluation.

Elk Grove Township Fire Protection District was also on the scene.

Witnesses reported that an elderly couple were in a car that was speeding eastbound along the left of shoulder of Interstate 90 before the accident happened. The car was hitting the center concrete barrier and temporary construction barricades on the left shoulder before the accident. The speeding car apparently got caught up on opening of the center concrete barrier. Illinois State Police are investigating.

Eastbound traffic was delayed for about one hour.
