Woodstock Willie and Punxsutawney Phil Predict 6 More Weeks of Winter

Woodstock Willie makes Groundhog Day prediction.

Woodstock Willie and Punxsutawney Phil agree: we’re going to have six more weeks of winter.

Several hundred people braved near zero weather conditions as Willie emerge from his tree stump to see his shadow Friday morning February 2, 2018 in Woodstock.

Tradition says the groundhogs have predicted we’re going to have six more weeks of winter, rather than an early spring.

Groundhog Day 2018: Punxsutawney Phil’s winter prediction live from Gobbler’s Knob | ABC News

In Pennsylvania, Groundhog Day a 132-year-old tradition that is held every year at Gobbler’s Knob and conducted by top hat-donning members of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. Tradition has it that the groundhog wakes up from hibernation on February 2, and if the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it doesn’t, warmer weather is just around the corner.

In Woodstock, it’s the same old story — over and over again.

The film “Groundhog Day” about the Pennsylvania event was released on February 12, 1993, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Woodstock, Illinois was chosen as the film location instead of Punxsutawney because the actual location “didn’t have a town center that looked good on camera,” according to Director Harold Ramis.

During his nightly TV weather forecast on February 1, weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) confidently reassures Pittsburgh viewers that an approaching winter storm will miss western Pennsylvania completely, but a blizzard hits the area and Phil Connors and his crew become stranded in Punxsutawney with news producer Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott).

Connors gets stuck in some strange time loop and wakes up on February 2 over and over again. Via repeat experiences, Connors transforms from a man in a depressed state to an all-around great guy with an attitude that leads to a romantic relationship with Hanson.

Repetition is the mother of learning.

Following the film, Woodstock has a Groundhog Day ceremony with Woodstock Willie instead of Punxsutawney Phil. So about the time of the year when people have had enough of winter weather, we have these ceremonies that look forward to spring weather. If Punxsutawney Phil and Woodstock Willie prognosticate six more weeks of winter, we can still hope the National Weather Forecast has a better forecast.

CHICAGO WEATHER SUPPORT GROUP
If you want to vent about the weather, this will be the place. Chicago might be the best city in the world (debatable), but “The Windy City” might have the worst weather … bitter cold winters, icy and dangerous roads and sidewalks, springs that begin too late, and summers that are too short. Let’s see if this group can spurn some comedians to describe just how bad it is, or cheer us up with the positive side of Chicago weather (beautiful sunsets, seasons, sunny days when we have them … tell us what you like). If you’ve moved away and live in a warm climate, go ahead make our day, and tell us your weather story or send a picture. We expect the group will also share some good places to travel to warm those bones in winter or get away from extreme heat in July and August. Or some Chicago weather survival tips (including warm food or cold drink suggestions).
