A South Holland male suspect is charged with two counts of 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of Herbert Lomax, age 48, and the shooting of a 47 year-old female at an apartment at the Diamond Lake Apartments on Deepwoods Drive in Mundelein, Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026.
Investigators determined Deandre Y. Harris, 21, of South Holland, is in a dating relationship with a woman, age 19, who lives at the apartment where the fatal shooting occurred. Harris was visiting his girlfriend when he got into an argument with the victim, Herbert Lomax, who lives in the same apartment, just before 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026. During the argument, Harris produced a semi-automatic pistol and began shooting. The gunfire struck Lomax several times, and struck Lomax’s girlfriend, a 47-year-old woman, who also lives in the apartment. Lomax was transported to an undisclosed hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. His girlfriend was transported to an undisclosed hospital with serious injuries that appear to be non-life-threatening, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
Immediately after the shooting, Mundelein police officers obtained a description of the suspect’s vehicle, which was actually Lomax’s Chevy Blazer, and broadcast the information on ISPERN (Illinois State Police Emergency Network) to law enforcement agencies throughout the region. Illinois State Police located the vehicle with the suspect lying in the back seat with a female black driving just after 12:40 p.m. Tuesday on I-294 SOUTH (Dan Ryan Expressway, Bishop Ford south of 115th Street) about three miles west of the Indiana border. The Illinois State Police conducted a felony traffic stop on I-94 SOUTH at 130th Street, and took an adult male black and an adult female black into custody by 1:00 p.m.
Additionally, the homicide suspect’s hometown, South Holland, Illinois, was located about five miles south of the traffic stop.
A firearm was located inside of Harris’ vehicle (Lomax’s vehicle), when searched Tuesday, following a search warrant.
After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of two counts of 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm against Harris. Harris was due in court morning. The state’s attorney’s office intends to file a petition to detain Harris in custody while awaiting trial.
No charges were indicated for the female black, and her identity was not initially disclosed.
Based on the preliminary information available, investigators believe this was a targeted, domestic-related incident.
Major Crime Task Force investigators and Mundelein Police detectives continue to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Mundelein responded about 2026 to a report of a shooting in Mundelein.
