Wisconsin-based Roundy’s opened their first Mariano’s Fresh Market in Arlington Heights, Illinois on Tuesday, July 20, 2010.

Kroger officially bought Roundy’s in December 2015, after announcing a definitive merger agreement on November 11, 2015, in an $800 million deal.

Next, in October 2022, there was an announcement of a mega-merger between Kroger and Albertsons, which would have required the Mariano’s name to go to another company. Both Kroger and Albertsons claimed the businesses need to merge to compete with Amazon and Walmart. However, the merger failed December 10, 2024 when a federal judge in Oregon and a state judge in Washington both issued injunctions to block the merger due to antitrust concerns.

Albertsons officially terminated the merger agreement with Kroger on December 11, 2026.

Mariano’s is named after Bob Mariano, who initially lived in Jefferson Park in Chicago, and then grew up in Arlington Heights. Bob Mariano became friends with Dominick DiMatteo — the founder of Dominick’s Finer Foods — as he rose through the ranks of Dominick’s. Bob Mariano became CEO and President at Dominick’s, and during part of his time employed at Dominick’s, he worked at the Dominick’s Arlington Heights location at 325 East Palatine Road, which after sitting empty for a several years, opened as an Amazon Fresh store. The Grand Opening for the Arlington Heights Amazon Fresh location was July 25, 2024. All Amazon Fresh stores were abruptly closed on February 1, 2026 after a permanent closure announcement on January 27, 2026. Amazon Fresh continues to operate online with same-day home deliveries.

Mariano’s currently has 39 grocery stores in Chicagoland.
