CNN reported Thursday, April 2, 2026 that Bondi was removed as US Attorney General and is being replaced by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as the acting Attorney General.

The New York Times and FOX News recently reported that President Trump was considering firing Bondi, and replacing her with Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin, but for now Todd Blanche will be acting United States Attorney General.

Bondi is the second Trump cabinet official to be ousted in less than 30 days, after he removed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on March 5, 2026, which followed criticism of her handling of ICE operations and Trump’s immigration agenda.

Donald J. Trump wrote on Truth Social at 12:17 pm Thursday, April 2, 2026 …

“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900. We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future, and our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Bondi, a Republican, was Florida’s state attorney general, and as US AG, she restored the Justice Department’s focus on violent crime.

Bondi faced criticism ‌over the removal of dozens of career prosecutors, including prosecutors of the January 6 Capitol attack, who worked on investigations against Trump, and Democrats accused her creating an unfair playing field of political retribution, mishandling the Epstein files, and confrontational behavior during congressional testimony.

Critic Bondi, Representative Chuy García, U.S. representative for Illinois’s 4th district since 2019, condemned her for prioritizing low-level immigration cases while reducing enforcement against corporate crime and public corruption.

Bondi is considered a staunch ally of Donald Trump. While Bondi was AG, the DOJ requested citizen voter data from 40 states to review compliance with election laws, but lawsuits in California, Georgia, and Michigan were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.

Bondi increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50 million and oversaw the seizure of approximately $700 million in assets linked to Maduro.

Bondi directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in high-profile cases, such as the Luigi Mangione case involving the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and the killing of Iryna Zarutska on public transportation.
