A Peoria County Sheriff’s Office deputy on a traffic stop in Peoria was seriously injured when he was shot multiple times during a foot pursuit over the weekend, according to the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office.

Larry D. Bell, age 51, charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, armed violence, methamphetamine possession and possession of a gun by a repeat felony offender, according to Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos.




Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026 in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue in South Peoria, Evans conducted a traffic stop. When he returned to the vehicle after running the occupants’ information, Larry D. Bell, who was a passenger, got out and fled on foot, according to Peoria County State’s Attorney’s office.

Larry D. Bell fired multiple shots as Evans chased him. Evans suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

during a manhunt Saturday night, police officers found Larry Bell hiding in an abandoned building in the block of 1800 West Garden Street. Bell suffered seizures while officers tried to take him into custody and he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Bell possessed a handgun and 25 grams of methamphetamine at the building where he was apprehended. The handgun as found after a search warrant was issued for the building.

Prosecutors filed a petition to detain Larry D. Bell for a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, 2026.




Peoria County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jack Evans, age 24, joined the sheriff’s office in 2023.

“Deputy Evans has served with professionalism, dedication, and a strong commitment to public safety since the day he took his oath. He has already earned numerous awards in his time here at PCSO,” the sheriff’s office posted on social media.

Evans underwent several hours of surgery for his gunshot wounds, and his treatment is expected to require a long road to recovery after sustaining gunshot wounds to both legs and his torso.
