Charlie Kirk was the only known gunshot victim at Utah Valley University (UVU), and only one gunshot was heard at the moment Charlie Kirk was shot; but police also responded to a report of gunshots near the Utah Valley University library on the north side of campus at least 10 minutes after Charlie Kirk was reported shot. Police also responded to a report of a subject wearing jeans, a black shirt, a black vest, and carrying a long rifle near the UVU library and near the Computer Science Building on the north side of campus. Media reports also indicate the shooter was wearing a black helmet.
Authorities indicated at a press conference at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2025 that the shot may have been fired from a rooftop, but Utah Valley University indicated the shot was fired from the Losee Student Success Center located east-northeast of the shooting scene at least 380 feet away.

The Computer Science building is located just northeast of the Losee Student Success Center by about 400 feet. The campus Fulton Library is located about 1300 feet northwest of the Losee Student Success Center.
The location where Charlie Kirk was sitting was surrounded on all sides by a tight configuration of campus building rooftops that apparently were not secured by police, campus security, or Charlie Kirk’s private security. Perimeter security has also been described as weak — failing to prevent the shooting, and failing to detect the shooter’s location and escape route in real time.

In the moments preceding the shooting, an audience member asked Charlie Kirk a question about transgender individuals involved in mass shootings in the United States.
Audience member: “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?”
Charlie Kirk: “Too many.”
Audience member: “The number is five. Now five is a lot … I am going to give you some credit. Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years.”
Charlie Kirk: “Counting or not counting gang violence?”
Audience member: “Great.”
Next, a single cracking sound from the shot of a rifle was heard, and Charlie Kirk was struck in the left side of his neck. He bled profusely from his neck, and he slumped unresponsive to his left in his chair.
Charlie Kirk was carried off the stage by private security to a black SUV, and was transported about two miles north on 800 West (street) to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah. He died in surgery at the hospital.
Charlie Kirk lived in Scottsdale, near Kirk’s Turning Point headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona.
