A ONE WAY sign for motorists on northbound Arlington Heights Road, which is the only sign for northbound motorists, doesn’t emphasize no left turn is permitted to westbound Euclid Avenue west of Euclid Avenue (CARDINAL NEWS).

A planned detour for westbound Euclid Avenue from Dryden Avenue that was scheduled to begin on August 11, 2025 was delayed, and didn’t begin until Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Instructions from the village website only indicated that westbound Euclid Avenue will be closed from Dryden Avenue to Arlington Heights Road, omitting the existing condition that westbound Euclid Avenue is also closed west of Arlington Heights Road. Additionally, road signs for motorists traveling on Arlington Heights Road are inadequate, and show carelessness on the part of the Village of Arlington Heights traffic authorities.

The Village of Arlington Heights published on the official website on vah.com that, “A planned detour originally scheduled to begin on August 11th will begin on Wednesday, August 27th.”

The notification from the village about the detour, which involved a road closure of westbound Euclid Avenue, indicated that the detour will impact westbound Euclid Avenue from Dryden Avenue to Arlington Heights Road for approximately four weeks. The notification failed to indicate that Euclid Avenue west of Arlington Heights Road would also be closed. The road closure is necessary for the construction involving a Water Main Improvement Project along Euclid Avenue.

The detour route directs westbound traffic on Euclid Avenue at Dryden Avenue to turn south (left) on Dryden Avenue, to west (right) on Miner Street, to south (left) on Arlington Heights Road, to northwest (right) on Northwest Highway. The detour then allows motorists to reconnect with Euclid Avenue at Northwest Highway. The village explained that eastbound traffic on Euclid Avenue will remain fully operational during the construction, and that northbound and southbound traffic on side streets will be able to cross over Euclid Avenue. However, the north/south streets are occasionally closed for construction at the respective intersection.

No signs along Arlington Heights Road give advance notice that westbound Euclid Avenue is closed at Arlington Heights Road (CARDINAL NEWS)

ROAD SIGNS INADEQUATE
Road signs are inadequate for motorists on Arlington Heights Road — the only four-lane roadway that extends the full length of Arlington Heights. There are no advanced notifications for motorists on northbound or southbound on Arlington Heights Road indicating that westbound Euclid Avenue is closed west of Arlington Heights Road. Additionally, there are no detour signs for motorists on Arlington Heights Road or signs indicating instructions for the detour route. The detour signs only exist for motorists who enter the detour at westbound Euclid Avenue at Dryden Avenue).

At the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Euclid Avenue there is a One-Way sign visible to northbound Arlington Heights Road motorists, indicating that eastbound Euclid Avenue is one-way east of Arlington Heights Road. The actual sign should be the regulatory NO LEFT TURN sign using red, white and black colors, because the point of the signage should be that westbound Euclid Avenue is closed west of Arlington Heights Road. The NO LEFT TURN sign more directly indicates there is NO LEFT TURN to westbound Euclid Avenue west of Arlington Heights Road. The single One-Way sign doesn’t emphasize that Euclid Avenue is one-way west of Arlington Heights; and a large barricade for westbound Euclid Avenue west of Arlington Heights Road is not always visible due to obstruction by traffic.

Also, at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Euclid Avenue, there is a One-Way sign visible to southbound Arlington Heights Road motorists, indicating that Euclid Avenue is one-way eastbound west of Arlington Heights Road. The actual sign should be the regulatory NO RIGHT TURN sign using red, white and black colors, which more directly indicates there is NO RIGHT TURN to westbound Euclid Avenue west of Arlington Heights Road.

Neither of the One-Way signs at Arlington Heights Road and Euclid Avenue are secured to a post, which would prevent the signs from being stolen, knocked down, blown down by wind, or turned so they are not visible to motorists.

A ONE WAY sign for motorists on southbound Arlington Heights Road, which is the only sign for southbound motorists, doesn't emphasize no right turn is permitted to westbound Euclid Avenue west of Euclid Avenue (CARDINAL NEWS)

Westbound Euclid Avenue closed, eastbound Euclid Avenue open, but temporarily stopped at 8:03 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2025 (CARDINAL NEWS).

Beginning Monday, August 11, 2025 there exists a planned detour on westbound Euclid Avenue, from Dryden Avenue to Arlington Heights Road, for approximately four weeks, due to construction related to a Water Main Improvement Project along Euclid Avenue.

The detour route will direct westbound traffic on Euclid Avenue to turn south (left) on Dryden Avenue, to west (right) on Miner Street, to south (left) on Arlington Heights Road, to northwest (right) on Northwest Highway, which will then reconnect with Euclid Avenue.

Eastbound traffic will remain fully operational during this time, according to the Village of Arlington Heights. However, observations early Monday morning showed that road construction trucks and vehicles entering and operating in the westbound lane and center lane of Euclid Avenue occasionally caused workers to temporarily stop eastbound traffic using a movable stop sign.
