
The Lake County Coroners Office released the identity of a man who was found deceased in the water at North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
The deceased has been identified as 76-year-old John Staggs, of Chicago. On Monday, July 14, 2025, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Examination results indicate that Mr. Staggs’ death is consistent with drowning.
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025 to a report of a missing person, possibly in the water at the North Point Marina, 701 North Point Drive in Winthrop Harbor. Police had been called to the area for a well-being check of a male in his 70s, who was last seen around 10:30 p.m. Friday. The missing man was initially described as a 76-year-old male from Chicago. He was found deceased in the water beneath a dock around 8:45 p.m. Saturday. The location was described as the end of the east dock near Slip 77.
A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm #17-69A was activated at 4:04 PM for a Water Rescue for divers and SONAR techs. Boats not needed.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation.
