Beginning in February of 2024 and continuing through May of 2025, the Chicago suburbs experienced a rash of over 115 overnight commercial burglaries targeting local retailers. The offenders in these cases arrived at their targeted locations in stolen vehicles and/or rental cars displaying stolen registration. They concealed their faces with hoods and masks as they forced entry into the retail establishments, stealing large volumes of retail goods. The offenders were observed on video surveillance to be carrying firearms during the commission of many of the burglaries. On numerous occasions, attempts to stop the vehicles were initiated by responding police departments. These efforts proved unsuccessful as the offenders fled at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, posing a significant risk to public safety prohibiting further pursuit.
To address this group, detectives from the Arlington Heights Police Department and Vernon Hills Police Department spearheaded a collaborative effort, with investigators from police departments that included suburban Addison, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Oak Lawn, Worth, Barrington, South Barrington, Deerfield, Wauconda, Gilberts, West Dundee, Gurnee, Lake Forest, Carpentersville, Des Plaines, Westchester, Wilmette, Northbrook, North Chicago, Glencoe, Skokie, Morton Grove; and the Chicago Police Department in an investigation coined “Operation Last Call.”
The “Operation Last Call” investigation identified six common offenders …

Each suspect was allegedly associated with a gang based in the west side of Chicago, that was connected to the burglaries.
The investigation revealed the group’s initial focus in 2023 was on the theft and resale of catalytic converters before shifting towards forced entry commercial burglaries. The group acquired stolen vehicles to use during the commission of these crimes through the utilization of digital programming devices that exploit the vulnerabilities of specific vehicles.
Later, stores with Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) throughout the Chicagoland area were researched and scouted for forced entry burglaries as an initial target before shifting to the theft of high-end liquors and eventually cosmetic goods.
Retailers suffered an estimated loss of over one million dollars. The proceeds of these crimes were then offered for sale online through social media networks and word of mouth in the community.
Based on the multi-jurisdictional nature of the investigation, Detectives worked with Prosecutors of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General. The efforts of Prosecutors and Detectives led to the indictment of ninety-eight charges against the co-conspirators. The case is being prosecuted by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office with assistance from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s
Office.
“Without the extraordinary collaboration of the agencies involved in this investigation, this result would not have been possible. We are grateful to our partners across the Chicago area who contributed to this effort.”
— Vernon Hills Police Chief Patrick L. Kreis
“The interagency cooperation and teamwork exhibited was instrumental to ensure this unlawful
activity received the appropriate level of law enforcement attention. This investigation is a great example of a well-coordinated multijurisdictional response to a pattern crime designed to hold the criminal element responsible.”— Arlington Heights Police Chief Nicholas A. Pecora, Jr.
The suspects in this case are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
