Today, Wednesday, June 4, 2025 a Lake County judge granted the State’s petition to detain Matthew Moy, age 35, who has been charged with one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm (Class X Felony), accused of shooting a man in the Prairie Wolf Forest Preserve Dog Park, 1917 South Waukegan Road in Lake Forest.

On June 1, 2025, Lake County Forest Preserve Police responded to a report of shots fired. Preliminary investigation revealed that Moy got into an altercation with the victim, who is in his twenties. The incident initially involved an argument with shoving, and was captured on video by the victim’s mother. The argument continued in the parking lot, where the defendant eventually pulled out a gun from his pocket, and shot the victim in the chest.

At the detention hearing, prosecutors argued that despite the defendant’s lack of criminal history and valid FOID and CCL, his actions show he is a threat to the community. Prosecutors said Matthew Moy escalated a minor altercation into an unjustified shooting of an unarmed victim in a public place. The gun may have initially been in the console of Moy’s vehicle when it was retrieved earlier during the argument.

Moy called 9-1-1 after the shooting, and the Lake County Forest Preserve police were the arresting agency.

The court granted the State’s Petition to Detain. Moy’s next court hearing is scheduled for June 6, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. for a status of preliminary hearing.

After the detention hearing, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart stated, “Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We are satisfied that this offender has been detained without the ability to use cash. This case shows that even minor arguments can turn potentially lethal when firearms are easily accessible. Our office will continue all efforts to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous people through our Violent Crimes Unit, Gun Violence Prevention Initiative, and other programs.”

Matthew Moy has no previous criminal history in Lake County, according to Circuit Court of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Lake County records.
