The Wheaton Police Department responded about 1:14 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2025 to Wheaton North High School to investigate a report of a suspicious item that may have looked like a weapon on campus, according to the Wheaton Police Department.

A witness reported that a student was seen with an item that looked like a gun before the student entered a boys locker room. The student then left the locker room. The school was placed on a “secure and teach” as a precaution while officers investigated the witness report.

Glen Ellyn and Lombard police officers and DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene and assisted Wheaton police officers.

According to Wheaton Police Department, after a thorough investigation, which included locating the item, the Wheaton Police Department determined there was no weapon at Wheaton North, and there was no active threat to the students, staff or building.

A witness told CARDINAL NEWS that a small group of students were detained, searched and investigated. The Wheaton Police Department did not indicate whether any students were charged, or whether any school discipline was administered by school officials. Although the Wheaton Police Department released information that an object of interest was found, they did not publicly identity what the object was, and did not describe the object.

The “secure and teach” was lifted, and school staff worked to dismiss students. Dismissal usually occurs at 2:15 p.m., according to the Wheaton Police Department. Mutual aid police were observed leaving the scene around 2:30 p.m., according to a neighbor that lives south of Wheaton North High School. The neighbor also observed police activity outside near the football field.

“The safety of our community is the Wheaton Police Department’s top priority, and officers will respond whenever a potential threat is reported. Wheaton Police work in close partnership with Community Unit School District 200 staff and appreciate the cooperation of all Wheaton North students and staff as officers completed this investigation.”
