SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 35 IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 200 AM CDT
A powerful spring cyclone is impacting the area this afternoon into Saturday and bring with it:
– A fast moving line of showers and thunderstorms tonight, with a threat for severe thunderstorms.
– Very strong, possibly damaging, winds Saturday morning through midday with gusts 55 to 65 mph likely.
– Very windy and unseasonably warm conditions exist this afternoon into tonight, wind gusts to 45-55 mph expected (briefly to 60 mph mid-late this evening). The conditions this afternoon already brought some grass and brush fires, and the conditions were near critical this afternoon, and conditions are expected to remain near critical this evening. An elevated threat of grass/brush fire spread exists Saturday.
There are two peak wind periods expected within the next 24 hours. The first peak wind period of 55 to 56 MPH gusts is expected around 12:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Friday/Saturday. The second peak wind period of 55 MPH gusts is expected about 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
Weather Radar at 7:40 p.m. Friday shows precipitation in a long multi-state line of thunderstorms moving eastward with the thunderstorm cells moving northward within the line. The radar signature shows counterclockwise motion associated with cyclonic low pressure (28.9) located near Sioux City, Iowa.
The thunderstorm line is forecast to arrive near O”Hare International Airport and the Arlington Heights area between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. Saturday.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 3am. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 56. Very windy, with a south southeast wind 30 to 35 mph decreasing to 20 to 25 mph. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. Very windy, with a southwest wind 25 to 35 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.
Saturday Night: A slight chance of rain showers between 10pm and 4am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Breezy, with a west northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 7am, then a chance of snow showers between 7am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 31. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60.
Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.
Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62.
Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.
Wednesday: Rain likely, mainly after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 66. Breezy.
Wednesday Night: Rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. Breezy.
Thursday: A chance of snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Breezy.
