Northbrook police received a report of a victim’s loss of personal property from a phone scam that occurred, Friday, February 21, 2025 in Northbrook, Illinois. The scam, initiated by a phone call from a scammer, was used to steal a woman’s recently purchased cell phone via a shipping scheme.
A complainant living in the block of 4100 Picardy Drive in a townhouse neighborhood in Northbrook, reported to police that she recently upgraded her Xfinity plan that included cell phone service. With her new plan, she had a new cell phone delivered to her residence.
A subject called falsely claiming to be with Xfinity stating she received the wrong phone, and she needed to personally ship it to a residence in another suburb. The complainant followed the instructions but never got a replacement. When she contacted Xfinity, they advised her that she was scammed and that wasn’t an Xfinity rep that gave her those instructions.
There was no information from police whether the investigation revealed at what point the scammer identified the woman and her newly shipped phone as a target.
