Oak Brook police officers had responded about 2:55 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2025 to a report of a delayed suspicious incident report in the York Woods subdivision in Oak Brook. While en route to the area, police officers located a dark colored Nissan Rogue with Indiana registration; and a Hyundai Sonata with Illinois registration — later determined to be stolen from the block of 100 Sheffield Lane in the York Woods neighborhood. Both vehicles were exiting the York Woods subdivision.

Police officers activated their emergency lights and pursued the vehicles onto eastbound 22nd Street into Westchester. Both occupants of the Sonata exited the vehicle, and a foot pursuit ensued in the area of Mayfair Avenue and Oxford Street. Oak Brook police officers, assisted by Westchester Police Department at about 3:28 a.m., apprehended one offender identified as Xavier E. Walker, age 19, and a second offender, identified as a male/black 17-year-old juvenile out of Chicago. The suspects in the Nissan Rogue fled, and arrived in the Homan neighborhood of Chicago about 90 minutes later to attempt their robbery.

Information gathered by Oak Brook police officers indicated a connection to a Burglary to Motor Vehicles case that occurred the night before in Hammond, Indiana, involving the adult and juvenile suspect that they apprehended.

During the investigation, Oak Brook police detectives learned that the offenders, while in Oak Brook, entered several vehicles and mailboxes with the intention of taking items of value.

Later, the Oak Brook Police Department was notified by the Chicago Police Department that the suspects in the Nissan Rogue that had been in Oak Brook’s jurisdiction around 3:00 a.m. were shot while they attempted the armed robbery in the Homan Square neighborhood in Chicago. Oak Brook police were informed that the robbery victim is a Sanitation Service employee in Chicago, and that the male robbery victim is also a CCL holder, who shot both offenders during the armed robbery attempt.

To summarize …

Among the Chicago suspects, one is dead, and one is in custody while in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Among the Oak Brook suspects, the adult suspect was not detained, and the juvenile suspect was detained in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center.

“This incident illustrates the importance of calling 911 when you observe anything out of the ordinary in your neighborhood which was done by an alert resident in this case. I’d like to thank our officers for responding to the area so quickly, locating the vehicles involved and making arrests. Criminals will be apprehended should they choose to flee from the Oak Brook police as demonstrated time and again. We are 100 percent committed to keeping this community safe through technology, collaboration and proactive policing.”

— Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis
