SOUTH ELGIN, IL – Police officers from the South Elgin Police Department responded about 1:00 a.m. January 30, 2025 for a report of a male subject who had forced entry into the home in the block of 600 Juli Drive in South Elgin. After breaking into the home, the suspect allegedly harmed an animal, and barricaded himself in the basement. The subject was armed and was known to the residents.

The residents immediately transported the injured animal to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

Soon after arrival and assessment of the scene, South Elgin police officers requested assistance from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Kane County SWAT. The de-escalation tactics that were employed allowed the SWAT officers to enter the residence in order to take the subject into custody and allowed police to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution. The subject was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.

The subject was identified as Daniel J. Jenkinson, 28, homeless on parole from Big Muddy Correctional Center, 251 Illinois Route 37 in Ina, Illinois — about 140 miles south of Champaign near I-57.

Jenkinson is currently on parole for Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer out of Kane County. He was released on parole on January 16, 2025 after being incarcerated at the Big Muddy Correctional Center since April 17, 2023 with a 42 month sentence.

He also had three previous sentences involving …

Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer in Cook County (sentenced 3 years from November 12, 2017).

Following the investigation, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against Jenkinson …

Violation of an Order of Protection (2 Counts) (with Prior Convictions) (Class 4 Felony) – 720 ILCS 5/12-3.4(a)(1)

Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal (Class 4 Felony) – 510 ILCS 70/3.02(a)

Additionally, the Illinois Department of Corrections has issued an arrest warrant for Jenkinson for Violation of Parole.

According to the South Elgin Police Department, Jenkinson has been formally arrested and remains in custody at a secure medical facility pending his next court appearance, during this on-going investigation. On court records Daniel Jenkinson is detained without bond at the Kane County Adult Justice Center.

“The South Elgin Police Department would like to thank the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Kane County SWAT for their assistance in safely resolving this incident.

The public is reminded that the filing of criminal charges is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial in a court of law where the court has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”
