DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis announced Tuesday, January 21, 2025 that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the State’s motion to detain four men accused of stealing nearly $5,000 worth of merchandise from the Oak Brook Sunglass Hut store. Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo, 24 (d.o.b. 5/26/2000), with no known address, Jonamer Barrios-Moreno, 28 (d.o.b. 7/10/1996) of the 4800 block of W. Homer, Chicago, Gregory Mendoza-Rivas, 25 (d.o.b. 9/10/1999) with no known address and David Vivas-Esis, 21 (d.o.b. 4/24/2003) of the 4800 block of W. Homer, Chicago, appeared at First Appearance Court this afternoon each charged with one count of Burglary (Class 2 Felony), one count of Robbery (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Retail Theft (Class 3 Felony). Additionally, Ricon-Jaramillo and Barrios-Moreno are each charged with one count of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (Class 4 Felony).
On January 20, 2025, at approximately 2:37 p.m., officers with the Oak Brook Police Department received information about suspicious activity involving a silver Ford Fusion parked in the Oak Brook Mall parking lot. Officers located the Ford and began surveillance. As officers surveilled the Ford, they alerted employees at Sunglass Hut about three individuals, later identified as Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis, and an unknown individual entering their store. Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno, Vivas-Esis and the unknown accomplice entered the Sunglasses Hut, selected thirteen pairs of sunglasses worth approximately $4,960, and allegedly attempted to flee the store without paying for the merchandise. Allegedly, after a brief struggle during which the defendants pulled an employee to the ground, the four men fled the store with Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis returning to the Ford, and the unknown accomplice fleeing into the mall.
After committing the robbery, Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis ran to, and then entered, the Ford. Officers activated their emergency lights and siren at which time the driver of the Ford, Rincon-Jaramillo, fled the scene. Allegedly, as Ricon-Jaramillo was driving the Ford, he reached speeds of approximately 93 mph on Butterfield Road, and ultimately made his way to eastbound I-290. Ricon-Jaramillo continued to flee from officers on I-290 and ultimately exited the expressway at southbound Mannheim Road. Police officers successfully deployed spike strips, Ricon-Jaramillo turned the Ford westbound onto Harrison and pulled over. All four defendants were then taken into custody.

“It is alleged that these defendants helped themselves to nearly $5,000 dollars’ worth of merchandise from the Sunglass Hut, got into a physical altercation with the store clerk, pulling her to the ground, and simply walked out the door without paying. To make matters worse, it is alleged that the driver of their getaway vehicle, Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo, then led police on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of approximately 93 mph, during a crowded holiday afternoon. This type of behavior that puts the general public as well as innocent motorists at risk will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I commend the Oak Brook Police Department for their work safely apprehending the defendants in this case, as well as for their ongoing efforts to protect our businesses and patrons. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Sean Kinsella and Anna Derkacz for their work in securing charges against these four men.”
— DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin
“Our department has an excellent partnership with Oakbrook Center security and we work closely together to keep the mall safe. These illegal migrant offenders came to the mall with the intention to work together and steal but found out that Oak Brook police and security work together to bring them to justice. I’d like to thank our officers for orchestrating an excellent plan to make these arrests as the offenders were intent on fleeing. I’d also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team for their supporting our efforts in prosecuting these offenders.”
— Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis
The next court date for each defendant is scheduled for February 18, 2025, for arraignment in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
