Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating an early morning single-vehicle crash that resulted in critical injuries near Fairfield Road and Chardon Road south of the Round Lake area between Ivanhoe and Volo.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Wauconda firefighters and paramedics responded about 4:40 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, to a report of a car-versus-tree traffic crash with injuries in the area of Fairfield Road and Chardon Road, unincorporated Wauconda. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were first on the scene. The vehicle, a 2016 GMC Sierra, was occupied only by the driver, a 28-year-old man from Palatine, who sustained critical injuries in the crash and required extrication from the vehicle by the fire department.

The driver was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical, life-threatening injuries.

A Grayslake fire engine crew was also assigned to the scene mutual aid.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver was traveling southbound on Fairfield Road when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the center line and left the pavement on the east side of the roadway. The vehicle then crossed a driveway and struck a large tree head-on. The crash scene was just south of Chardon Road in unincorporated Wauconda where there is a Grayslake address. The nearest major intersection is Route 60 and Fairfield Road, north of the crash scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. Fairfield Road is a 2-lane highway with a vehicle-width hard shoulder. For southbound vehicles there is a left-hand curve north of Chardon Road, followed by a right-hand curve south of Chardon Road. The Speed Limit is 45 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured April 2023.
