The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County (MCAT) are investigating a fatal traffic crash involving a northbound vehicle and two southbound vehicles that occurred Tuesday afternoon on the east side of Lake Barrington near North Barrington, Tower Lakes, and North Barrington Elementary School.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Wauconda Fire District firefighters and paramedics responded about 4:07 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024 to the area of Route 59 north of Miller Road for a three-vehicle crash with injuries involving a truck. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found three vehicles with heavy damage.

One victim required extrication.

The driver of a Hyundai sedan was treated by paramedics and transported to an area hospital where she was subsequently pronounced deceased. The drivers of the other vehicles initially reported they sustained minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Hyundai sedan — a 53-year-old woman of Schaumburg — was traveling northbound on Route 59. As she drove the Hyundai northbound on Route 59, she veered into the southbound lanes of traffic for an unknown reason. The Hyundai struck the rear of a semi-trailer, being pulled by a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck traveling southbound. The truck was driven by a 62-year-old man of Hawthorn Woods. The Hyundai then struck a southbound Lincoln SUV, driven by a 46-year-old man of Cary.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the driver of the Hyundai.

The crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and MCAT.

Illinois Route 59 is a two-lane rural highway with narrow shoulders and curves both north and south of the intersection with Miller Road (Lake County A42).

The Speed Limit on Route 59 is 50 MPH both north and south of Miller Road, according to Google Street View images October 2022. There are no center line rumble strips in the October 2022 images.

There is a School Entrance warning sign for North Barrington Elementary School, but no School Speed Zone on Route 59 near the school.
