A Lake County Judge denied pre-trial release of a Long Grove carjacking suspect who resides in Cicero, Illinois.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies captured and arrested Victor M. Masick, age 19, of Cicero, after a carjacking that occurred in Long Grove Saturday morning, November 18, 2023.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office has approved charges against Masick of vehicular hijacking, possession of a stolen motor vehicle (<$25,000), three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated fleeing to elude, attempted vehicle or hijacking, and burglary. A 58-year-old woman of Long Grove was pumping gas at the Marathon gas station, 209 Robert Parker Coffin Road, Long Grove on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at approximately 11:30 a.m. As she finished pumping gas, she heard a car crash. The sound of the crash was a silver Kia, driven by 19-year-old Victor M. Masick of the 5700 block of West Park Avenue, Cicero, crashing into a gas pump at the Marathon gas station. After crashing, Masick allegedly exited the Kia, which was later determined to be stolen out of Berwin. Masick allegedly approached the victim as she entered the driver’s seat of her car, and allegedly forcefully removed the victim from her vehicle and attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle — a Mercedes Benz. The victim fought back and was able to get back into the driver’s seat of her car. The offender then allegedly battered her and forcefully removed her from the driver’s seat again, and stole her car.

Lake County Sheriff’s Telecommunicators broadcasted an emergency regional message regarding the incident. The victim’s vehicle was located by Hawthorn Woods Police Officers in the area of Old McHenry Road and Quentin Road. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Masick fled. He eventually crashed the victim’s vehicle in the area of Old McHenry Road and Abby Glenn Drive, Hawthorn Woods.

Numerous sheriff’s deputies responded to the area and located Masick on Route 12 and Old McHenry Road. The offender attempted to carjack the driver of a Ford Mustang on Route 12; however, the driver had his doors locked. Sheriff’s deputies apprehended Masick and took him into custody without further incident.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

Masick was initially in custody at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, pending his criminal charges. He was booked at 6:50 p.m. November 18, 2023, and currently is in custody at the Lake County Adult Corrections Facility, 29 South Martin Luther King Jr Avenue in Waukegan.

During a detention hearing on Thursday, November 30, 2023, Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted a Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office request to hold Masick, ruling no conditions of release could ensure the community’s safety.

Masick is 6’0″, 175 LBS.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
