Police, firefighters and paramedics from Palatine responded at 9:54 a.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2023 the to the report of a fire in the block of 300 West Glade Road in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department unit arrived on the scene three minutes later to report heavy smoke coming from the front of a two-story, single-family home. Initial responding crews met with a homeowner reporting that everyone was out of the house. The initial fire crews deployed a hose line and opened the ceiling on the second floor, ensuring there was no fire in the attic above the living space. Additional crews searched the house and confirmed there were no victims. The fire was declared under control at 10:28 a.m. Firefighters continued to move debris and check void spaces for hidden fire and to ventilate smoke and toxic gases for some time after that.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire. Due to the significant fire and smoke damage, the home is uninhabitable, displacing two residents. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release. Palatine Fire Department Investigators have determined that a space heater in the bedroom caused this fire. The fire was fought by 24 firefighters, staffing four four engines, one rescue squad, one ladder truck, and three ambulances, which responded to the scene along with four command officers. The Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows Fire Departments provided fire apparatus to the scene. During the incident, a unit from the Long Grove Fire Protection District stood by at Palatine Fire Station 82 to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment, or a condo.

Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of any fire. In an emergency, do not delay exiting the home to search for pets or any other belongings. For more fire safety information visit www.palatine.il.us and www.nfpa.org.
