The seasons first observed snowfall was brief and didn’t accumulate on pavement, but icy bridges were likely factors in several crashes this morning, Tuesday, October 31, 2023. A serious crash occurred in northern Lake County near the Illinois-Wisconsin state line.

The serious crash occurred about 9:17 a.m. Tuesday on Russell Road over the Des Plaines River in Newport Township near Zion. There was an unresponsive person in one of two heavily damaged vehicles. A dog was also found injured in one of the vehicles. Russell Road was shut down between I-94 and Kilbourne Road near the Des Plaines River for an extended crash investigation.

A five-vehicle crash also occurred about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday on the Palatine Road bridge over Elmhurst Road. Vehicles were crashed in eastbound and westbound lanes. Two people were reported injured and were transported to an area hospital by Prospect Heights Fire Protection District paramedics.

A crash also occurred on the Lake Cook Road bridge over Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling. Initial reports indicated there were no significant injuries, but the scene above on Lake Cook Road looked large from below on Milwaukee Avenue.

The sun shined for a brief period beginning about 10:00 a.m. which melted snow cover on grass, vehicles and windshields.
