Schaumburg police responded about 11:06 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2023 to a report of an aggravated vehicular hijacking at Streets of Woodfield — possibly near Dick’s Sporting Goods, 601 North Martingale Road in Schaumburg, IL. A vehicle was taken from a victim while shots were fired. The precise location of the crime was not confirmed.

Police received a report that a black Dodge Charger was taken.

There was a report that two male/Hispanic suspects were involved in the attempted vehicular hijacking, and that shots were fired.

Initially, suspects were only described as two male/Hispanics.

The suspects were last seen fleeing southbound on Frontage Road.

The offenders’ original vehicle was described as a black Kia.

The black Dodge Charger was discovered by law enforcement near I-290 approaching downtown Chicago — eastbound Morgan near Racine. Next the Dodge Charger was followed on eastbound I-290 near Ida B. Wells. Soon the driver of the stolen Dodge Charger went southbound on Wabash from 11th, and approached Roosevelt. Next the driver went westbound on Roosevelt toward Clark Street. He passed Jefferson about 11:37 p.m. and then entered westbound on I-290. Traveling at speeds of 110 to 115 MPH, the offender passed Racine on I-290 WEST … then was westbound I-290 at Sacramento about 11:40 p.m.

The offender exited at Kostner and headed westbound on Kostner, then northbound Cicero from Congress Parkway, then eastbound on Madison. The offender came up to Kostner and turned southbound. Eventually the Charger was driven westbound on Roosevelt again. The offender passed Central and then went north on Austin toward I-290. The offender entered the eastbound lanes going westbound and did a U-turn — then immediately crashed.

Fire department paramedics were called to the scene.

A male/Hispanic wearing a blue shirt and black jeans ran across lanes. The offender climbed a fence, and was captured near Austin and I-290.

One suspect, possibly the driver, was still at large near I-290 and Austin. The offender at large was described as a male/Hispanic, age 14 to 17, 5’6″, wearing a black face mask, and a black hoodie.

I-290 was shut down during the foot pursuit.

A handgun was found on the seat of the Dodge Charger after the crash.

Elmhurst police, Oak Park Police and additional Illinois State Police troopers arrived to help search for the at large offender. Police officers from additional nearby communities may also have been on the scene.

Did they catch the the “at large” offender? … developing.
