Mundelein Fire Department, Countryside Fire Protection District and Mundelein Police Department responded about 11:36 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2023 to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians at Butterfield Road and Canterbury Lane in Mundelein.

Police officers arrived to find two injured pedestrians on the west side of Butterfield Road just south of Canterbury Lane. A 39-year-old male had significant non-life-threatening injuries, and a 37 year-old female had severe, life-threatening injuries.

Both victims were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where the female victim was pronounced deceased in the emergency room.

Based on the seriousness of the crash, the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was called to assist in the investigation. Preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrians were walking in the roadway when the vehicle struck them.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified.

The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Liliia Leshchenko of Mundelein. On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results of the autopsy indicate that Ms. Leshchenko died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

The crash investigation continues by the Mundelein Police Department and MCAT.

Preliminary investigation indicated the pedestrians were walking west, crossing Butterfield Road, when they were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Butterfield Road. The Speed Limit on Butterfield Road is 40 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images. Butterfield Road is a 4-lane thoroughfare with a left turn in each direction at the intersection with Canterbury Lane to the west and Plymouth Farms Road to the east.

There is a crosswalk across Butterfield Road just south of the intersection. There are no curves, hills or dips on Butterfield Road. There are several warning signs for the crosswalk. However, the parkway could be obscured by a wood slat fence and shrubs and tree branches at the southbound side parkway of Butterfield Road north of the intersection.

The 67 year old driver of the vehicle did not sustain injuries and was cooperative with investigators. Initially police said there was no indication that the driver of the vehicle was impaired, although toxicology results are pending.

A second, independent crash occurred shortly after the pedestrian crash, resulting in minor injuries to one of the drivers involved in the second crash. That driver was also transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, and was listed in ‘stable condition,’ according to the Mundelein Police Department.
