Mount Prospect Man Dies of Apparent Drowning in Lake Catherine Near Antioch

Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Antioch were dispatched about 3:50 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2023 to a report of a man who jumped into the water and did not resurface at Lake Catherine, located in unincorporated Antioch. Firefighters and divers responded to the north shore area where Lake Catherine connects to Channel Lake in the block of 43100 North Andyville Lane. The initial search was unsuccessful in locating the man while sonar technicians worked to locate the victim for about eight hours Saturday — temporarily calling off the search around midnight Saturday/Sunday. Divers and technicians resumed the search about 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning until about 3:15 p.m.

Following the searches Saturday and Sunday, search crews were called back to the area about 12:55 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2023; and fire department divers recovered a body just before 2:20 p.m. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was immediately notified and responded to the scene. The water in the area where drivers and sonar technicians were searching is approximately 30 feet deep.




Preliminary investigation shows a 52-year-old man of Mount Prospect, jumped off a pontoon boat, being operated by his adult son, to swim. He briefly resurfaced, but then fell below the water surface and was not seen again.

According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the deceased man has been identified as 52-year-old Robert Mozdzynski, from Mount Prospect. On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results of the autopsy indicate that Mr. Mozdzynski death was consistent with drowning. Toxicology tests are pending.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Lake Catherine is located northwest of Antioch. Lake Catherine is also the name of an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lake County, Illinois with 2020 census, the population was 1,279. The Lake Catherine community is bordered to the north by Kenosha County, Wisconsin, to the east by the village of Antioch, and to the west by the community of Channel Lake. The Lake Catherine community surrounds Lake Catherine, which is considered a bay of Channel Lake, one of the Chain O’Lakes of northern Illinois.
