Woman, Male Victim Shot in Waukegan; At Large Husband Is Shooting Suspect

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Waukegan responded about 11:14 p.m. Wednesday May 24, 2023, to the block of 1300 Bridge Drive to a report of a shooting. Initially the police were dispatched to a report of two people shot in the block of 1100 Lakehurst Road

Upon arrival, Waukegan Police located two gunshot victims in a parking lot of a packaging business, and determined the scene was secure. Paramedic moved up to the scene of the victims to begin emergency medical treatment. The first victim, a 42-year-old female Zion resident, was shot in the stomach or abdomen. The second victim, a 25-year-old male North Chicago resident, was shot in the chest.

A vehicle belonging to the female shooting victim was discovered with a bullet hole in the windshield. Both victims were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where they were treated. Both patients were described in “stable condition.”

The shooting incident appears to be domestic-related, as the suspect is the female victim’s husband, Tomas Tapia, a 42-year-old Zion resident. According to the victim, they are currently separated. Tapia’s vehicle was located a short time later in Waukegan but was unoccupied.

The Waukegan Police Department is asking if anyone has information on the whereabouts of Tomas Tapia to report it to the Police Department. Tapia should be considered armed and dangerous. No attempts should be made to apprehend Tapia; if he is seen, call 911 immediately.
