Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Gurnee firefighters and paramedics were dispatched about 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2023 to a report of a crash with injuries at Route 41 and Stearns School Road in unincorporated Gurnee. Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and paramedics arrived and located three vehicles with heavy damage — Ford Focus, a Ford F150 pickup truck, and a Honda Pilot.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 19 year-old female of Zion, was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. The driver of the Ford F150 pickup truck was transported to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda Pilot was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with minor injuries.

Two crash victims needed to be extricated from their vehicles. One victim was extricated by 11:22 a.m., and a second victim was extricated by 11:28 a.m. Three ambulances were assigned to the crash, and extra crews on fire engines were assigned to use hydraulic tools for extrication.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2019 Ford F150, driven by a 77-year-old man of Lindenhurst, was traveling southbound on Route 41 approaching Stearns School Road. As the driver of the Ford pickup truck traveled through the intersection, the 19-year-old female driver of the 2012 Ford Focus was traveling northbound, and attempted to make a left turn onto westbound Stearns School Road, directly in front of the F150 pickup truck. The F150 ‘T-Boned’ the Focus. This caused the Ford Focus to strike a 42-year-old North Chicago woman’s 2010 Honda Pilot, which was stopped in traffic facing eastbound on Stearns Road just west of Route 41.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
