Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators conducted a thorough investigation into the deadly crash that took the life of Peter P. Kliora, who was age 78 and lived in Beach Park.

Traffic crash investigators determined the driver of an Infiniti M35, Tabios J. Day, 32, of the block of 700 West Glen Flora Avenue, Waukegan, was drag racing another driver just prior to a fatal crash crash that occurred on October 10, 2023. Crash investigators determined Day was traveling nearly 100 MPH prior to striking Kliora’s Toyota.

On April 19, 2023, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office presented the facts of the case to a Lake County Grand Jury. The Grand Jury issued a True Bill of Indictment for the following charges:

Reckless Homicide

Aggravated Reckless Driving Causing Great Bodily Harm

Aggravated Street Racing

A Lake County Judge signed the arrest warrant and set a bond of $350,000.00. Tabios J. Day was booked in Lake County Jail at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded about 1:15 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2022 to a report of a crash with injuries at Sheridan Road and West Howard Street, Beach Park. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found two vehicles with heavy damage — a Toyota Prius and an Infiniti M35.

The driver of the Toyota had to be extricated from the vehicle and was subsequently transported to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Infiniti was also transported to Vista East Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Some witnesses reported the Infiniti was traveling at a high rate of speed and recklessly prior to the crash.

Preliminary investigation showed a Toyota Prius, driven by an adult male (Peter P. Kliora), was making a left turn from Howard Street onto northbound Sheridan Road. At the same time an Infiniti M35, driven by a 32-year-old man of Waukegan (Tabios J. Day), was traveling southbound on Sheridan Road, in the same area. Both vehicles collided in the intersection.

The crash remains was under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Team.

The intersection is a T-intersection. Sheridan Road is a four-lane highway with two lanes in each directions and no turn lanes. The Speed Limit on Sheridan Road is 40 MPH, according to Google Maps Traffic Layer images captured on September 2019.

Howard Street is side street that runs west of the T-intersection with Sheridan Road.
