Joe Majkowski, a retired St. Viator High School basketball coach and counselor pleaded guilty Wednesday, April 20, 2022 to a misdemeanor battery charge following allegations he groped a female student at St. Viator in his office.

Majkowski, 67, was sentenced to 24 months of probation as part of a plea deal. The initial felony charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse was dropped.

Majkowski was ordered to have no contact with anyone under age 18, and undergo sex offender evaluation and follow any recommendations based on the sex offender evaluation.

Majkowski lived in Arlington Heights about five blocks from St. Viator when he was arrested in December 2019. His current address was not verified, and he is not listed in the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry database as of April 21, 2022. At the time of publication of this report, it was not known whether he is required to register as a sex offender.

Majkowski initially faced charges in July 2019, when four 15-year-old students said the former head boys basketball coach sent them inappropriate text messages. Joe Majkowski was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Next, a teen victim at the time of the complaint told a therapist in October 2019 that Majkowski inappropriately touched her earlier that year. The teenaged girl and her family on April 20, 2022 agreed with the disposition of the case, according to Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jaclyn Lantz.

The misdemeanor charges have been transferred back to a Rolling Meadows Cook County Circuit Court misdemeanor courtroom, where Majkowski will appear in May 2022.

Majkowski coached at St. Viator for 35 years and was named an IBCA (Illinois Basketball Coaches Association) “Coach of the Year” in 2010. He was also inducted in the Class of 2011 Hall of Fame in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Majkowski stopped coaching in 2011.

Joe Majkowski was head of the St. Viator Counseling Department until his retirement at the end of the 2018-2019 school year, according to records at St. Viator.
