Grayslake Resident in Custody on 1st Degree Murder Charges Following Stabbing in Round Lake Beach

A suspect has been arrested in a stabbing homicide that occurred on Monday, February 28, 2022 in the block of 2000 Apache Trail in Round Lake Beach.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, a male resident of Grayslake, Jesus I. Vargas, was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and was released from Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was interviewed by police investigators and admitted to stabbing a victim multiple times after a verbal altercation on Apache Trail. The two males were believed to be involved in a romantic relationship.




A witness at the scene said the victim was unarmed and was stabbed by Vargas multiple times. After stabbing the victim, a witness observed Vargas cut himself multiple times.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy of the victim on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Preliminary autopsy results indicate the victim, Brian Mahdee, age 37, of Round Lake Beach, died from multiple sharp force injuries.




Jesus I. Vargas, 29 years old of Grayslake, is being held at the Lake County Jail on two counts of first degree murder. A bond hearing is set for Wednesday morning, March 2, 2022.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

On Monday, February 28, 2022, at approximately 2:59 p.m., Round Lake Beach Police Department officers responded to the block of 2000 of Apache Trail for the report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they found one male with multiple lacerations who told the responding officers an “offender” was inside the residence. After providing this information, the male was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Once inside the residence, police officers located several other people, and were told an “offender” was in the garage. Officers made entry to the garage and found a deceased male, who at least one witness said was unarmed, with multiple stab wounds.

Round Lake Beach Police Department officers secured the scene and requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. The stabbing homicide is believed to be an isolated domestic incident with no threat to the community at this time, according to the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is scheduled for March 1, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.
