Wheaton police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 4:53 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022 to a report of a car crash with a traffic signal pole at Butterfield Road (Route 56) and Orchard Road in Wheaton.
Rescuers on arrival discovered a single-vehicle fatal crash in which a car hit a traffic signal pole at the southeast corner of Butterfield Road and Orchard Road.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was identified as a 16-year-old Wheaton Warrenville South high school student.
The MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team was activated, and Butterfield Road was shut down for approximately 5 hours while the reconstruction team conducted its investigation.

Initially, no additional information about the circumstances surrounding the crash was available. Information regarding the direction of travel of the crash was not initially released. The crash occurred at the intersection where where Orchard Road ends at Butterfield Road. Damage to the vehicle indicated the crash was a high-speed crash.
The vehicle hit a large traffic standard at the southeast corner of the intersection. The traffic standard sujpports overhead traffic signals that control eastbound Butterfield Road (Route 56). Police did not indicated whether the vehicle was southbound on Orchard Roads or eastbound on Butterfield Road before the crash.
