Discarded Fire Pit Ashes May Have Caused Fire in Attached Garage

Police and firefighters from Wheaton responded about 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2021 to a report of a fire in an attached garage in the block of 500 Robinwood Lane in Wheaton.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered a fire in the attached garage of a single-family home, and brought the fire under control within minutes. The sole occupant of the home safely escaped, and the incident did not result in any injuries.

The Wheaton Fire Department conducted a fire investigation, and the cause of the fire is deemed accidental. Initial assessment indicates the fire appears to have been related to the discarded ashes from a fire pit.

Damage estimates were initially unavailable.

The City of Wheaton Building Department was called to the scene. The Wheaton Fire Department was also assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities. The building was deemed uninhabitable and turned back over to the property owner after the fire.
