Illinois State Police (ISP) District Chicago officials responded about 11:17 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 2021 responded to a report of multiple vehicle crash with one vehicle on fire on I-90 northbound at Sayre Avenue. The first trooper on the scene reported the crash was on northbound I-90 at Natoma Avenue and reported that a box truck was on fully engulfed on fire. A second passenger vehicle was also on fire. All lanes were down at the crash scene which was near Mile Marker 82.

Note: “Northbound” I-90 WEST is actually westbound I-90 WEST at this stretch of interstate. Illinois State police uses the term “northbound” interchangeably with “outbound”. I-90 is also the Kennedy Expressway at the scene at Natoma Avenue in Chicago.

The driver of the box truck had rear-ended the passenger vehicle that was also burning, and the driver of that passenger vehicle was found dead at the scene. A chain-reaction crash subsequently occurred involving five more vehicles. The driver of the box truck and both the driver and passenger of one other vehicle involved in the 7-vehicle crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local area hospital for treatment. All other drivers and passengers initially reported no injuries.

The Illinois State Police opened an investigation of a fatal traffic crash involving seven motor vehicles on Interstate 90 northbound at Natoma Avenue in Cook County.

According to the Illinois State Police, preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a White 2016 Freightliner straight truck (Unit 1) traveling northbound on Interstate 90 near Natoma Avenue, failed to reduce speed to prevent a crash as the driver approached traffic. The traffic had slowed in the lane due to a previous crash. The front end of the truck (Unit 1) struck the rear of a passenger vehicle (Unit 2), which caused a chain reaction crash concluding with the involvement of a total of seven vehicles. As a result of the crash, the passenger vehicle (Unit 2) also became engulfed in flames. The Unit 2 driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., all lanes of Interstate 90 WEST (westbound) near Natoma Avenue remained closed for the investigation, with traffic diverted off at Bryn Mawr Avenue; all lanes were reopened at approximately 6:39 a.m.

The events surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

The Illinois State Police reminded that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
