The Chicago Bears announced Monday, October 25, 2021 that Bears coach Matt Nagy tested positive for COVID-19 Monday morning and will quarantine away from Halas Hall.

Nagy, who is fully vaccinated, made the revelation while conducting a Zoom call with the media from his car.

“It’s a reminder for all of us to be extremely cautious and to understand where we’re at,” Nagy said. “We’ve seen it with other teams in the league and society in general, so we’re working through that.”

The Bears currently have four players on the reserve/COVID-19 list in tight end Jimmy Graham, right tackle Elijah Wilkinson, outside linebacker Robert Quinn and linebacker Caleb Johnson. Running back Damien Williams and receivers coach Mike Furrey had also recently been on the COVID list but have since rejoined the team.

Nagy missed the first two days of rookie minicamp in May 2021 due to being a close contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID.

As was the case in May, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will take over some of Nagy’s head-coaching duties during his absence. That will allow offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and defensive coordinator Sean Desai to continue to focus on their respective sides of the ball.

“Coach Tabor will go ahead and run any of the team meetings that I would not be a part of,” Nagy said. “That again is what we did in [rookie minicamp] … We created a plan two years ago when we started this thing. We have a role for every coach ad the roles that if we don’t have a coach, who steps in. That’s how we’ll go moving forward.

“We kind of went through this before where I was out. I know our group of coaches and players are extremely resilient. For us moving forward, we’re going to have a good plan in place.”

According to the Chicago Bears Senior Writer Larry Mayer, Nagy said that he is feeling “pretty good” and that no other members of the organization had tested positive as of late Monday morning.

“As of now, no,” Nagy said. “We’re still working through some of the team. But that’s a good sign for sure. We need to make sure that we do everything we’re supposed to do here in regards to the protocols.”
