Woman Dies in Fire in Townhouse on Anna Way Near Reserve Drive, Elgin


Police, firefighters and paramedics from Elgin responded about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021 to a report of an activated carbon monoxide alarm near a townhouse fire at another unit in the block of 2400 Anna Way in Elgin.

Firefighters on arrival reported smoke showing from an adjacent townhouse and called for additional fire companies for a working fire response. The first crew interior during a search for victims found a 64-year-old woman on the second floor, removed her from the building, performed CPR and treated her with Advanced Life Support. Paramedics transported her to Amita Health St. Joseph Hospital Elgin, where she was pronounced dead.

Initially the identity of the woman was not released, pending notification of family.

Extra crews extinguished the fire and found a large hole burned through the floor. Upon a thorough search of the building there were no other victims found.

Damage to the building was estimated at more than $180,000, and the building was declared uninhabitable, according to Elgin Fire Department.

A preliminary investigation indicated the fire began in the space between the first and second floor. The Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
