Two Men Overboard from Canoe: 1 Safe, But Schaumburg Man Found Dead near Mineola Bay, Fox Lake

Police, firefighters, divers, and paramedics from Fox Lake responded about 1:40 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021 to a report of a person screaming for help and that the 9-1-1 callers believed the person was in the water. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the call for help. Police on arrival discovered that two people were overboard from a tipped canoe near the Mineola Hotel, 91 Cora Avenue in Fox Lake.




One man was reported missing and one man was able to swim to shore. The individual that swam to shore was located in the 0-99 block of Holly Avenue, Fox Lake. The man, a 45-year-old man of Flagler, Florida, informed Lake County Sheriff’s deputies that he and his friend, a 30-year-old man of Schaumburg, went canoeing around 1:30 a.m. The canoe flipped and both men fell into the water. Neither man was wearing a life vest. The 30-year-old was a poor swimmer, went under the water and did not resurface.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies who also serve on the Sheriff’s Marine Unit immediately went to the Marine Base and launched two sheriff’s boats into the water in an attempt to rescue the missing person. They were joined by Fox Lake Fire Protection District and other fire/rescue boats.




Firefighter activity and diver activity was near 91 Cora Avenue and about 35 Holly Avenue about 1300 feet south in Mineola Bay. A water search by divers and ground search along the lake were ongoing in darkness very early Friday morning. Side scan sonar equipment was also dispatched to the scene to search underwater.

A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm #22-69 was activated at about 2:22 a.m. for a water rescue. Firefighters, divers, sonar techs and/or command officers from Cary, Deerfield, Fox River Grove, McHenry, and Nunda were assigned to the scene.

Just before 8:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021, members of the Fox Lake Fire Protection District located the 30-year-old Schaumburg man in the water, and found him deceased. The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out at about 8:28 a.m.

The investigation continues by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Lake County Coroner’s Office, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
