Police say a male resident of Chicago entered his ex-girlfriend’s Round Lake Park home and beat her last August 2020. Kevin J. Calhoun was indicted Wednesday, June 23, 2021 by a Lake County grand jury for several charges including felony home invasion.

Kevin James Calhoun, 31, is charged with felony counts of home invasion causing injury, criminal trespass to residence, domestic battery, and violation of order of protection. Calhoun is also charged for violating a restriction as a child sex offender in a public park, loitering in a public park as a child sex offender, and for loitering as a child sex offender. The victims’s home is located near a park.

Round Lake Park Police said that officers were dispatched to the victim’s home about 11:31 p.m. August 18, 2020 in the block of 300 Forest Glen Drive. When they arrived, they found a woman, who they later determined was a former girlfriend of Calhoun’s, on the front lawn of the house. After she escaped from Calhoun inside her house, the woman told police officers that Calhoun was in the house and that she was afraid he was going to kill her children. The children were found unharmed after police officers searched the home. Calhoun had fled the scene.

Police discovered the woman with recent injuries on her head and body. She told police she was asleep when Calhoun started beating her. Calhoun was not permitted at the house because of an order of protection. She said he was yelling that he was going to kill her while he beat her and dragged her out of bed.

The woman said she slept with her phone in her hand and was able to call 911. When Calhoun noticed that she had called the police, he smashed her phone.

She told police officers that Calhoun tried to push her into a back room of the home so that her children would not wake up while hearing that she was being beaten. The female victim was able to kick Calhoun, and run out of the house where police were arriving outside.

Calhoun was taken into custody on or around May 28, 2021 and has been held since in Lake County jail. A judge set Calhoun’s bail at $500,000 — requiring $50,000 (10 percent) cash for release on bail while his trial is pending.

Calhoun is scheduled to appear before a judge on July 1, 2021 for an arraignment hearing. The home invasion charge is a class X felony that could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
