Police, firefighters and paramedics from Mount Prospect responded about 7:44 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 2021 to a report of a rollover traffic crash with entrapment on Rand Road (Route 12) and Mount Prospect Road involving two vehicles. The crash was initially dispatched as Rand Road and Central Road. The crash actually occurred at the intersection of Rand Road that crosses the alignment of Mount Prospect Road and a Mount Prospect Plaza driveway.
Police officers were first on the scene, and upon arrival, located a traffic crash on Rand Road, northwest of the intersection with Mount Prospect Road. The crash involved a white Honda sedan with heavy damage and a gold Ford SUV, upside down on the roof with heavy front-end damage. Police discovered that the three occupants of the white Honda were deceased. The three victims in the white Honda were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8:00 a.m. The identities of the deceased were initially withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the gold Ford was extricated by 7:59 a.m., and was transported by Mount Prospect Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The driver’s injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening. Mount Prospect police did not initially disclose that charges were pending, but charges and citations are expected as a result of the crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the white Honda with two passengers was traveling southbound from the exit of Mount Prospect Plaza shopping center and entered Rand Road. The driver of the gold Ford was traveling northwestbound on Rand Road from Central Road. The driver of the gold Ford entered the intersection and struck the white Honda sedan on the driver’s side in the westbound lanes of Rand Road. According to Mount Prospect Police Department, the impact of the crash resulted in the gold Ford rolling over and coming to rest on its roof.
After impact, the vehicles veered across the center median and traveled diagonally across Rand Road into the eastbound lanes of Rand Road and came to rest in front of the Century Tile sign. Immediately after impact, the gold Ford may have rolled over on top of the white Honda, causing depression of the roof of the Honda. The vehicles then separated, and the gold Ford SUV slid on the roof, while the Honda slid upright with severe intrusion damage on the driver’s side. Both vehicles left a trail of debris, including some large pieces of vehicle debris.
According to the Mount Prospect Police Department, the traffic crash is currently being investigated by the Mount Prospect Police Department Major Crash Investigation Team, along with assistance from the Major Case Assistance Team’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) Team. All lanes of Rand Road (Route 12) were re-opened at 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing and more information will be provided when it is available.
The Mount Prospect Police Department did not initially comment regarding the speed factor involved in the crash. Observation of the impact point of the crash, the size of the pieces of debris, the debris trail, and the resting position of the vehicles about 185 feet west of the impact point initially indicates the driver of the gold Ford was traveling at an excessively high speed.
The Mount Prospect Police Department urges anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or has any additional information, to contact the department’s Major Crash Investigation Team at 847-870-5656.
