Illinois State police and Lisle-Woodridge Fire District firefighters responded about 9:58 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2021 to the westbound lanes of I-88 at Mile Marker 127.25 Mile Marker near Naperville Road.

An Illinois State Police trooper on patrol discovered smoke on I-88 from a truck fire, and upon arrival, discovered a bobtail truck had crashed into a Ford Expedition SUV. Two people were able to escape the crash, but one person was trapped in an SUV and killed while the Ford Expedition became fully-involved with flames. One person who had been traveling in the stalled Ford Expedition may have been outside the vehicle before the crash occurred on I-88 near Naperville and Lisle Township.

Lanes 1, 2 and 3 of I-88 West were shut down for the crash that occurred on the left shoulder. According to Illinois State Police, an SUV was disabled in a traffic lane just east of Naperville Road just before 10:00 a.m. and was struck by the semi-trailer truck without a trailer.

For an unknown reason the truck driver was unable to stop. Exit 127 is the exit to Naperville Road. Mile Marker 127.5 is on the bridge over Naperville Road. Mile Marker 127.25 is further west near the BMO Harris Bank parking garage. The crash was located closer to the Dell EMC bulding east of Naperville Road.

LIVE TRAFFIC MAP …

On the eastbound I-88, lanes 1 and 2 were shut down because of heavy black smoke crossing over onto the eastbound side of the tollway. Lanes 3 and 4 of I-88 were kept open.

Lisle-Woodridge firefighters extinguished the fire while paramedics treated the two people who were able to escape. They escaped the flames before Illinois State Police and firefighters arrived.

The two victims treated by paramedics were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

The trapped passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Illinois State police kept some or all westbound lanes of I-88 for an extended period for the Crash Reconstruction investigation.
