The Arlington Heights Police Department on Monday morning released information about a reported carjacking Sunday night that the police department says turned out to be a false report. Arlington Heights police say that on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a citizen reported she had been a victim of a carjacking which occurred in the area of Central Road and Dwyer Avenue in Arlington Heights. The Arlington Heights Police Department immediately began investigating the allegation, according to police. Police say that shortly into the investigation, it was learned the report was false and that the citizen provided the Arlington Heights Police Department with inaccurate information when making the report. Arlington Heights police said Monday that no crime occurred in Arlington Heights and that there is no threat to the public related to this false police report.

The falsely reported targeted carjacking vehicle, a 2015 white Nissan Rogue, was reported spotted in Park Ridge just before 8:30 p.m. Therefore the time frame of the alleged 8:30 p.m. false report and the report of the sighting in Park Ridge over 20 minutes away remains subject to questions. The vehicle was reported in Park Ridge about 45 minutes after the alleged incident was falsely reported to have occurred (7:30 p.m.), and the vehicle was reported spotted in Park Ridge before the alleged false report was even made to the Arlington Heights Police Department (approximately 8:30 p.m.). Unless the woman falsely and simultaneously reported to police that she spotted the vehicle in Park Ridge shortly before 8:30 p.m. AND that she had been carjacked at 7:30 p.m., this story seems implausible. Certainly the most confusing part is this: Why and how is the Cook County Sheriff’s Office announcing (at 8:15 p.m.) the 7:30 p.m. carjacking AND the subsequent spotting of the vehicle in Park Ridge before the Arlington Heights Police Department received the report at approximately 8:30 p.m.?

Another confusing part of the story involves the the comparison of the following bits of information: Why did the Cook County Sheriff’s Office announce an address of 800 West Central Road (the address for Northwest Community Hospital), while the Arlington Heights Police Department announced an address of Central Road and Dwyer Avenue? The intersection of Central Road and Dwyer Avenue is in the block of 1600 West Central Road — near Northwest Community Hospital, but a significant distance when ironing out details regarding the validity of the carjacking or while attempting to pinpoint where the carjacking actually occurred.

Certainly there can be reasonable explanations for the discrepancies here. Cardinal News just isn’t able to resolve these discrepancies at this time.

The Arlington Heights police alert about the false carjacking report was sent on Monday, February 22, 2021 at 10:29 a.m. CST, but was not attributed to any specific investigator, and was not attributed to the authority of any police official or command officer within the Arlington Heights Police Department. Usually releases involving investigations include these attributions.

In the report, later alleged to be false, the offenders were described as …

#1) a male/white wearing a red jacket with khaki shorts, and

#2) a male/white initially with no additional descriptors.

Apparently the Arlington Heights Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the case Sunday night.

The Arlington Heights Police Department did not initially state whether the woman faces charges for filing a false police report. The statement also did not describe her age or the municipality of her residence.
